On April 28th, Clayton McCullough, the 46-year-old manager of the Miami Marlins, spoke to the press before their game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. McCullough, who previously served as the Dodgers' first base coach until 2024, praised Shohei Ohtani, a pitcher he once coached, for his exceptional character. During his time with the Dodgers, McCullough assisted Ohtani in achieving a personal record of 59 stolen bases, and together they initiated the now-famous "head bump" celebration at first base. Despite moving to a different team, McCullough has maintained a good relationship with Ohtani. The previous night, Ohtani, leading off the inning, acknowledged McCullough with a bow and performed an "air head bump" after reaching first base. McCullough fondly recalled, "Shohei is a wonderful person with a great sense of humor. He made me laugh a bit last night." Although he admires Ohtani, McCullough admitted that facing him as an opponent is challenging. "Of course, I wish he would stop hitting against us," he said with a wry smile. With Ohtani focusing on pitching that day, McCullough noted, "Tonight, we'll have to contend with him on the mound, which is no easy task." Reflecting on his year with Ohtani, McCullough expressed deep respect for him, not only for his outstanding season but also for his behind-the-scenes demeanor and being a great teammate. As the Marlins faced a three-game losing streak, McCullough aimed to break the negative trend by overcoming Ohtani, whose talent and character he greatly admires.
