In an exclusive interview, Chairman Ohashi shared his thoughts. On May 2, at Tokyo Dome, Naoya Inoue (33), the unified world super bantamweight champion from Ohashi Gym, will face Junto Nakatani (28), a former three-division world champion from M.T Gym. Both fighters are undefeated in 32 matches, setting the stage for what is being called the "greatest Japanese showdown in history." Sankei Sports conducted exclusive interviews with the chairmen of both camps, presenting a two-part emergency series. The first part features Hideyuki Ohashi (61), chairman of Ohashi Gym, who coaches Inoue and organizes the event. He shared insights into the realization of this big match. The second part will feature Ken Murano (60), chairman of M.T Gym. This highly anticipated match between two undefeated fighters has captured global attention. Chairman Ohashi revealed how Inoue, the main eventer at Tokyo Dome for the first time in two years, is preparing. "Last year, he fought four matches, more than usual. The training from those four matches has accumulated, and this year, it has become even more ingrained. He's very motivated but seems to be enjoying it," Ohashi said. Inoue, now a superstar, has surpassed the realm of ordinary people. "He's like a 'mokkei'—calm and unflappable, maintaining composure. He doesn't become arrogant and always greets everyone loudly before leaving the gym. There's nothing to criticize," Ohashi added. The legendary sumo wrestler Futabayama's unprecedented winning streak ended at 69, and he famously said, "I have not yet become a mokkei." Reflecting on this, Ohashi believes Inoue has already reached that level. Inoue ranks second, and Nakatani sixth, in "The Ring" magazine's pound-for-pound (PFP) rankings, highlighting their global recognition as formidable opponents. "This ultimate showdown between two fighters ranked in the top ten PFP worldwide is like something out of a manga. You can't plan for a fight like this," Ohashi remarked. Two years ago, in May, the Tokyo Dome event, held for the first time in 34 years, saw 43,000 fans go wild for Inoue's fight. This time, an estimated 55,000, the largest in Japanese history, are expected to attend. "The tickets sold incredibly fast. I didn't expect them to sell out so quickly. Even boxing insiders are saying they can't get tickets. Many casual fans bought them, so the challenge now is to draw them in. I'm confident the appeal will come across," Ohashi said. He had been planning the Nakatani fight since immediately after the last Tokyo Dome event, with discussions at the "Kanagawa Kenshikai" meeting in May 2024, where Nakatani's M.T Gym is involved.
