During the game, with the Dodgers trailing by one run in the third inning and two outs, Ohtani struck out Stowers with a high outside pitch clocked at 98.6 mph (approximately 158.6 km/h), marking his fifth strikeout of the day and his 700th overall. Ohtani's journey to this milestone began with his first MLB strikeout against Marcus Semien of the Athletics on April 1, 2018, during his time with the Angels. Despite undergoing two right elbow surgeries in October 2018 and September 2023, Ohtani reached this milestone in his ninth season and 104th game. In his NPB career, he recorded 624 strikeouts. Known as the "God of Baseball," Ohtani surpassed Babe Ruth's record of 501 strikeouts, which was the most by any player with over 100 home runs until Ohtani broke it in 2023. With 700 strikeouts and 286 home runs, Ohtani continues to forge new paths in baseball history. Among Japanese pitchers, Yu Darvish of the Padres holds the record with 2,075 strikeouts, followed by Hideo Nomo with 1,918 and Kenta Maeda with 1,055.
